Chef Yuvna Damani talks to What’s Up Bangalore about how “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, in a most delightful way!”
Inspired to name her patisserie after the title of the Mary Poppins song, Chef Yuvna Damani believes in the motto of sticking to what one does best. Spoonful of Sugar, which has been a brand for eight years, was started in Koramangala a year ago. “I opened this place along with my mum who was a home baker. I completed Le Grand Diplôme from Le Cordon Bleu and I also hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management from Les Roches International School of Hotel Management. Not only am I a chef I’m also a foodie, so I love creating what I’d like to eat. I’m inspired by travel, TV shows and recipe books but it’s a craving that comes from within that inspires me,” she says. Yuvna loves to share her knowledge in French cuisine and also conducts workshops for amateur cooks in her own cooking studio.
Spoonful of Sugar has a team of 20 where six people out of those work in the kitchen. The menu consists of delicious desserts and we get to try the salted caramel cake – it’s a tiny slice of sinful heaven. The flavours complement each other perfectly and there’s a taste that lingers that makes you crave for more. We also try the lasagne that melts in the mouth. The portion is rather small, but there’s no compromise on the taste. Yuvna tells us that the salted caramel cake, red velvet cake and banoffee pie are hot sellers. She says she’s still figuring out what caters best to foodies in Koramangala and she’s most likely to come up with a brunch-like menu soon. Presently on the menu you will find Gateux Aux Fruits, Mousse cakes, Luxury cakes, Cheese cakes, Chocotherapy, Petit Fours, American Cakes, Tea Cakes Galore, SOS Cupcakes and Brownies, Muffins and Smart Cookies. In the savoury menu you will fine tartlets, quiches, lasagne, pasta, sandwiches and salads.
